Intense sadness and depressive episodes are relatively common in adolescence and often confused and overmedicated. In this presentation Anna Mascellani will describe different forms of depressive responses of adolescents to personal and family events: reactive depression following divorce/marital conflicts, sudden losses, intergenerational conflicts, family abuse and neglect, school failures, social exclusion; masked depression when it is covered by conduct disorders, ADHD, eating disorders; or secondary depression as a consequence of learning disabilities, psychosomatic or neurological problems. Self- harm and attempted suicide are very much connected with similar conditions of personal and family despair, sense of personal failure and abandonment. Supporting an adolescent at risk in individual therapy is useful to restore self-confidence and safety; however including the family in the treatment will elicit group resources and a sense of belonging and will link adolescents’ dramatic behaviour (signals of life or death) to family distortions and destructiveness.
Anna Mascellani will present how to build a therapeutic alliance with the depressed or suicidal adolescent as well as with the family as a whole, in order to transform incompetent-dangerous behaviour into new opportunities for personal growth and family positive directions. Enlarging the system by including a larger family unit in therapy and collaborating with hospitals, when it is needed, can be a very productive project to restore health and strengthen adolescents’ self-esteem.
Main ideas about this topic have been illustrated in the volume “Storie di adolescenza” written by Maurizio Andolfi and Anna Mascellani, Raffaello Cortina Publishing House, Milan 2010 (published in French by De Boeck, in Spanish by Gedisa, in Dutch by Molemann and soon in English by Wisdom Moon Publishing, San Diego, CA
