In this workshop I would like to present the findings from my master project on the use of personal stories and experiences within the family therapy context, the phenomenon called ‘self-disclosure’. I use personal stories and experiences in my own work as family therapist, however, I experienced that within the field of Family therapy, there was little focus on this issue. Although there recently has been some focus on and interest in the connection between the therapist’s personal and professional life, the subject is still sparsely defined, described and explored. My project was a part of Master in family therapy at HiOA 2012, in Oslo, Norway. My intention was to investigate the meaning of sharing stories. I have interviewed seven experienced family therapist about this subject. To analyze the interviews I have used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.
The following three questions will be explored:
1. What kind of stories from their own life do family therapists tell in therapy with children, adolescents and their families?
2. In which situations during the therapy session, do family therapists tell their personal stories?
3. What kind of importance does sharing of personal experiences have?
In my view the findings are very relevant to family therapy, both for clinical work and for educational institutions that provide training in family therapy and systemic thinking. The results presented here are derived from knowledge based on experiences family therapists have from their own work.
