The purpose of this research is to explore narratives of Turkish-speaking women who live in London and are diagnosed with ‘depression’; how they relate to their depression; how they construct their identity around ‘depression’; how it does affect their relationships and how they are informed by their culture in relation to ‘depression’. The author used qualitative research methodology within a Systemic Social Constructionist approach as the research paradigm. Semi-structured interviews were used with thee participants for data collection and narrative analysis as a method of analysis. The result of the research showed that Turkish speaking immigrant women relate to their ‘depression’ through different contexts in their life such as negative experiences of migration, stressful and violent marriage, lack of support an so on. Women’s new identities are co-created within those contexts such as powerless, unconfident and unworthy and so on. Diagnosis of ‘depression’ can be helpful and unhelpful for Turkish-speaking immigrant women. There is lack of knowledge within Turkish and Kurdish culture about ‘depression’. Mental health is a stigma within these cultures therefore ‘depression’ does affect the way women are perceived within their community and the way they perceive themselves and their relationships in a negative way.
