From its small beginning and up until today, family therapy has been an alternative to individual based understanding and practices for people within Mental health. Clearly in opposition to the then leading ethos of psychoanalysis, family therapy embarked on a quest for theories that could go beyond the individual and its inner world, to grasp what happens between people; with people in interaction and relationships. Today, one continuation of this is a growing interest and focus on affects. Inspired by developmental psychology a »affective turn» can be detected within family therapy. Using psychoanalytic conceptualizations as a contrast and a place of departure, this workshop intends to discuss this »affective turn» with transference/countertransference as a such a point of departure. Starting with repetition as rooted in difference and not the same, the relationship between the past and the present is redefined as the construction or bringing forth of the new and different. This is inherent in repetition. The present moment becomes the place where opportunities generated by repetition of the past is brought forth. The present moment as that which always is different from its past becomes a place of connection and meeting in the here-and- now. This connection is mediated through our affects. The human species are not only able to identify affects and feelings through observing body language, but are able to be in resonance with the feeling other. This makes emotional transport possible. Consequences for a family based practice will be elaborated.
