The aim of this study is to describe, compare and relate de Basic Family Relations Inventory (BFRI) in families with a child with an eating disorder and control families. It was applied to 384 participants of whom 192 participants (96 families) formed the clinical group and 192 participants (96 families) the control group. Results showed statistically significant differences in the scores of marital and parental functions of both men and women between the clinical and control families. Results also established a cut-off point of 56 for marital functions, with a sensitivity and specificity of 61% being the area under the curve 0.633, and a cut-off point of 42 for parental functions, with a sensitivity and specificity of 67% being the area under the curve 0.706. Using these cut-off points, the distribution of the ratings of the clinical and control group of both functions was significantly different. The proportion of ratings below the established cut-off points was greater in the clinical group than in the control group. The BFRI is considered a useful tool to assess the Basic Family Relations, marital and parental functions, in families with a child with an eating disorder and largely discriminate them from those of control families.
