The U.N. Declaration of Human Rights clearly states that the family is “the natural and fundamental group unit of society”, and that families are, “entitled to protection by society and the State”.However, family has by and large not been a central focus, value, method, or goal of psychosocial services directed at the mental health consequences of political violence.Family has been the central focus of a program of services and research concerning political violence that we have been conducting in the U.S. and abroad, in collaboration with local families, communities, and professionals. This presentation will discuss the work of two collaborative projects: CAFES (Coffee and Family Education and Support) with Bosnians in Chicago and KFPEC (Kosovo Family Professional Education Collaborative) in Kosovo.A collaboratively designed and implemented approach to family services, based upon families' needs, strengths, and meanings, is a feasible and beneficial approach to helping families that have survived political violence
