Sex therapy is far more than simple application of specific techniques in the management of specific sexual dysfunctions. It requires a skilled therapist who can interpret behavioural, cognitive, supportive and educational elements in the same treatment package in an elegant way. An individually tailored approach, rather than a standart one that considers the individual or couple as `unique` should be preferred for successful intervention. Difficulties in sex therapy may arise due to: a) the therapist b) the client or the couple c)the nature of the problem. The presentation will discuss some of the difficulties at various stages of therapy, including assessment stage, and suggests strategies that the therapist may use to facilitate progress in treatment when such difficulties arise. Some of the topics that will be covered are difficulties related to a) educational background of the therapist b) the selection of couples suitable for sex therapy and type of intervention made c) cultural and subcultural factors d) keeping the confidentiality of the information taken during separate interviews of the partners e) the client tendency to give general versus specific info about the nature of the existing problem f) embarresment or misunderstanding caused by the vocabulary used during interview g) the lack of motivation for sex therapy h) ignorance, sexual myths and dysfunctional beliefs i) lack of liaison between different disciplines of medicine j) disagreement on setting goals k) failures in compliance with the homework assignments l) individuals who seek help, but do not have partners.
