Family therapy developed out of a specific social context and although narrative and systemic ideas are undoubtedly useful they are not unique to western culture. The number of the family therapy training programmes, offered by the outside experts in a host culture increased rapidly in the past decade. Turkey is a scene of such efforts. Unfortunately, attempts to impart skills frequently find little space for discussion and assumptions can be made in the flurries of benevolent expediency.
Such training programmes paradoxically create a wonderful opportunity for translating and interpreting both the host culture, and the historical and prevailing stories of family therapy. Interpretation of family therapy content in each unique setting is surely to be encouraged as it enriches the discipline. The aim of course being pluralism, rather than globalisation.
This session will focuse on this cross-cultural journey of the expertise in theTurkish culture aiming to reflect both on the expert and local experiences.
