From the beginning of time adolescent females have learned how to act and determine their worth through their experiences within and expectations imposed by their families. The importance of others, social values, and cultural dynamics are transmitted within the family setting. This educational process ties generation to generation and defines what is important to the family's basic roots via rituals.
This proposed poster presentation will focus on the importance of ritualistic behavior as a means of transmitting family beliefs. The ways these messages are transmitted, the importance of rituals in socialization and the security found through ritualistic behavior will also be addressed.
Many of the covert bargains in families are demonstrated behaviorally, but emerge from the family rituals and beliefs taught to its members. Gender role conflict, social and family expectations, career choices and importance within the family is projected through rituals and roles afforded females within the family.
Qualitative research findings will be presented in relation to family rituals and gender roles. Findings support the importance of family, behavioral choices and expectations for self and others.
