Purpose:
To find out 1) common particularity of family and self-understanding from adolescence point of view and 2) determine the significance to add “required family members”, Projective Genogramming (Kaslow, F. 1995) is used.
Methods:
Subjects were 19 students (9 males, 10 females) at a technical college for welfare. They were given exercises after lessons family psychology. The exercise was to let them draw their genogram and then ask them to add “required family members” to it. Then “required family members”, “the reason”, and “family- and self-understanding” were described. Subjects were asked, “Whom would you like to add to your genogram?” This technique is a part of Projective Genogramming, which ”fosters both the external journey to recreate one's biological historical past and the internal journey to process one's emotions about the connections to relative and one's own place and role in the extended family system.” (Kaslow, 1995)
Results and Conclusion:
The “required family members” were assorted into three categories. And the subjects were asked to add members to their genogram from those three their categories. The results revealed their common particularities.
I. Parents/Grandparents generation were added (9 subjects) wish to change family, desire to change the past for the benefit of the present
II. Brothers/Sisters/Cousins generation were added (23 subjects fellow conflict, rivalry, desire for dependence/ to be depended on , desire to fellow
III. Spouse/Children were added ( 6 subjects) reproduction, having family, hope in the future.
The significance of “adding required family members” are as follows: 1) Understanding one's Genogram is made clear by adopting subject's point of view, and 2) both self-confrontation and catharsis appear the subject, because “required family members” cannot become real as the past is decided and the future undecided. “Required family members” are clue to understand family and self, and it develops itself into examination of legacy, loyalty and multigenerational transmission process.
