VIII. EFTA - EUROPEAN FAMILY THERAPY ASSOCIATION CONGRESS
Family and Marital Therapies Association - Turkey (AETD) has hosted the VIII. EFTA (European Family Therapy Association) Congress that took place in İstanbul Lütfi Kırdar Congress Center between 24-27 October 2013.

in Family and Marital Therapy Association - AETD (Turkey) has been founded in 1997 and began to operate in 1998. The objective of our association is to contribute to the studies in Turkey oriented towards marital and family therapies. In this course; following up, establishment, encouragement and representation of studies oriented towards this field are in consideration. 

There are 340 members in our association. These members are psychiatrists, psychologists, psychological counselors, social workers and family practitioners. 

In year 2000, February; following the process of foundation and getting into operation/ beginning to function, the I. National Symposium of Family and Marital Therapies has been conducted. The national symposium which had been extended with the attendance of 150 specialists and colleagues, established groundwork for National Congresses which were then included in future activity plans of our association.  

In May 2001, as an association activity, a seminar named “Spring Dialogues-I” has been organized. Emre Konuk, Murat Dokur and Yavuz Erten participated to this seminar as speakers.

The I. National Congress for Marital and Family Therapies which has been carried out by our association has been held in 8-9-10 March, 2002, in Istanbul. The congress has provided information and been progressive as a representation of marital and family therapies.

In addition to many specialists from our country; Chana Winer (Israel) -the president of International Family Therapy Association (IFTA), Judith Landau (USA) – the president of Linking Human Systems, LLC and Cynthia Carel (Israel) from Schneider Children’s Medical Center participated in our congress as speakers.

The II. National Congress of Marital and Family Therapies has been held in 7-8-9 March 2003, in Istanbul with the participation of 300 people of which were 60 speakers. Our Congress, which had the theme of “RELATIONSHIP- Psychopathology- THERAPY”, has attained its goal by having a rich content and with the participation of Chana Winer (Israel) -the president of the International Family Therapy Association, Jeanne Defontaine -member of Paris Psychoanalysis Society and School of Group and Family Psychoanalysis, Bernard Defontaine -member of School of Group and Family Psychoanalysis, and participation of many other specialists from our country as well. 

Objectives of our association include progression of marital and family therapies, contribution to the information related to the field, establishment of a communicational network between professionals by unifying specialists from the field, and obtaining and giving information about the process of marital and family therapies around the world by contacting international association and societies. As an outcome of our association’s attempts and efforts in this direction of objectives; XIV. IFTA World Congress has been held in Istanbul, Conrad Hotel from   24th through 27th of March 2004, with the organization of the International Family Therapy Association (IFTA) and the Marital and Family Therapy Association - AETD (Turkey). The theme of the conference is: “Families in a Time of Global Crisis”.

The III. National Congress of Family and Marital Therapies has been held in 25-26-27 of March, in 2005, at Boğaziçi University, GKM Building and its theme was “Integrative Orientation and Therapy.”

With the contribution of very important and precious colleagues both from abroad and from our country, who had presentations about various subjects, a rich scientific program has been prepared.  We had 250 colleagues and over 60 speakers from the fields of psychiatry, psychology, psychological counseling, social work, family medicine, psychiatry nursing, human resources etc. who attended our congress.
 
Also we had two important key note speakers; Prof. Dr. Mony Elkaim from Libre University of Brussels Medical School, who is also the founder and the past president of EFTA (European Family Therapy Assocaiton) and Prof. Dr. Carlos Sluzki from George Washington University Medical School.
 
The IV. National Congress of Family and Marital Therapies has been held in 16-17-18 of March, in Istanbul at 2007, at Boğaziçi University, GKM Building and its theme was “From Systemic to Dynamic”.

With the contribution of very important and precious colleagues both from abroad and from our country, who had presentations about various subjects, a rich scientific program has been prepared.  About 80 people presenting, we had 350 colleagues who attended our congress.
Matteo Selvini fom Milan School, Howard Liddle from USA, Tom Andersen and Eva Kjellberg from Norway, the IFTA General Secretary William Hiebert from USA and Andrew Giffney from Ireland also contributed with their presentations.

The V. National Congress of Family and Marital Therapies whas beenill be held between 13 – 14 – 15 March 2009, in İstanbul at İTÜ Maslak SDKM building and its theme was “Post-Structuralism ain Therapy and Beyond.” prof. Dr. Humberto Maturana and Prof. Dr. Rodolfo de Bernard have attended as invited speakers.
 
The VI. National Congress of Family and Marital Therapies has been held between 14-15-16 October 2011, in İstanbul at İTÜ Maslak SDKM building and its theme was “Psychotherapist Identity.” The president of EFTA (European Family Therapy Association) Kyriaki Polychroni, Prof. Dr. Maurizio Andolfi and Prof. Dr. Kurt Hawleg have attended to the congrressv as invited speakers.
 
Lastly, as AETD we organized the VIII. EFTA (European Family Therapy Association) Congress in Istanbul at Lütfi Kırdar Congress Center between 24-27 October 2013. The theme of the congress was "Oppotunities in a Time of Crisis: The Role of the Family". Hosting the very important pioneers and contirbute to ther work was a marvellous chance for us.
